Editorial 0502 -- Her Majesty's Secret Servant

In the centenary anniversary of Ian Fleming’s birth, and 100 years since a Chicago Cubs world championship (1908 was a very good year!) Her Majesty's Secret Servant decided to devote an entire issue to the evil megalomaniacs (and their toadies) of James Bond's world.

It’s been said that a James Bond film is only as good as its villain. This issue builds on that premise, so please take a look at our special "Villains" section, A Delectation of Evil. As we did with our previous Editors Survey, the editorial board and a couple of special contributors take a stab at objectively rating the villains of the series. There's some great stuff in it: Returning contributor Dean Kilbride contemplates the three incarnations of 007's bête noir -- Ernst Stavro Blofeld -- in You Only Live Thrice. Bond blogger Deborah Lipp reviews the history of the Bond femme fatale in Erotic Evil. Dave Morefield, in So You Want to Be an Evil Genius, has some serious lessons for the freshman megalomaniac. And our good pal Mac McSharry speculates on, er... what could have been... with Franz Sanchez and Bond in Mano a Mano.

More good stuff: Paul Clarke revisits Timothy Dalton's doubleheader in The Memory of Danger; Bill Koenig has an entertaining piece on the old FBI TV show -- The FBI vs. Spies! And our Bond Market editor Ed Werner reports back from a visit with the king of James Bond collectors, Doug Redenius, in License to Killect. We hope you enjoy this new issue. As always, your comments are welcome.

Millions eagerly anticipate the beginning of this November. Is it to be Obama? Will it be McCain? One thing is for sure, it WILL be James Bond. The last time a U.S. Presidential election coincided with the same year as a Bond picture release was 1964. Goldfinger was the film that truly started the 007 phenomenon, and while America elected a Texas Democrat, it was James Bond that changed the world. Let's hope that Quantum of Solace will be in the grand tradition of that film, as well as its immediate predecessor, the great Casino Royale.

So have a read, and be sure to vote! What fun!

Warmest Regards,

Tom Zielinski
